USB Problem On Windows XP

I have a Tyan S2099 mainboard and have been having USB problems for awhile. I have 2 USB 2.0 ports in the front of my computer, and one of these will not respond when I connect a device. The other one will sometimes cause the machine to lock up.

I opened device manager (Windows XP) and then "USB controllers", and I see an "unknown device". When I look at the driver for this device, I see that there is "none installed". Could this be the cause of the problem?

Hardware defect?

It smells a bit like a hardware defect. To test this you could boot from a Linux CD/DVD like Knoppix and check whether the USB ports also fail with this completely different operating system. If they do, a hardware defect is almost certain.

In that case a workaround short of swapping the whole motherboard would be to buy and install a separate USB adapter and just ignore the defective ports.

If, however, they work fine under Linux, then a defect in the Windows XP drivers is more likely.
