Does it say you have 5.25 or 6 GB RAM?
To find out, you may have to go into the BIOS setup screens.

Memory test

I would now run a memory test program to see whether parts of the RAM are defective, at least the one in the BIOS.
Have you changed any BIOS settings like memory remapping before the problem appeared? You don't want memory remapping activated in the BIOS.
Any other BIOS settings that could hurt? Overclocking? Too tight memory timing? Test with the prescribed settings first.
Is your Vista up to date? There was at least one patch relating to memory issues, if my memory serves me well, so get all the updates from Microsoft Update or by means of automatic updates.
If all this fails, begin to pull memory modules from the computer and relocate and reseat them. Try to find out whether one particular memory module causes the problem.
well i have been overclocking

well i have been overclocking but its all on auto but that was a long time ago that i did that and speed step is turned off , and memory remapping is also turned off and i have done quite a few tests and they all say i have 6 GB of ram i have tried moving the ram around and using one at a time but they all work just fine and vista is still only reading 5.25 GB of ram
Less RAM

What does Vista recognize when you reduce the RAM?

I didn't think of it either. Should have recommended it.
Can't think of everything, apparently. But anyway, I'm glad you could solve the problem.
And we will keep this here as a benefit for others who happen to stumble into the same problem.
