Hi,

I am posting on your site after appreciating the professionnalism found in answers to other posts.

I bought an HP pavilion zv5000 on January 2005 with an extended warranty.

I upgraded the memory to 1.2 go, running xp home sp2 ( I am not on sp3 as there is a conflict with Filemaker pro server with sp3)

The device burns CD's correctly, however, right at the outset, the dvd burning process did not work correctly but not being too familiar with dvd burning for not having had the need for it in the past, I tought I might not be using the burning software correctly. My schedule being very busy at the time and not urgently needing that feature to work, I did not explore any further.

In 2007, going on a trip, I decided to use the airport time to burn dvd's of family pictures. The drive died on me as I was on the runway! I brought back the laptop to the store which sent it to HP to get it repaired.

HP put in a new drive and reinstalled windows without asking me if I minded. Obviously I had a backup but it is always a pain, when you are out of time , to reinstall and reconfigure everything.

Still being very busy, I did not have an opportunity to try my drive up to this summer of 2008. I tried once more, using roxio ( which came with the laptop when I bought it) as well as Nero ( I was told it is one of the best tool). Having another XP desktop that had Nero 6.6.1.6, I installed that software and the dvd burning process did not work again. I tried to upgrade to 6.6.1.15 but that upgrade is no longer available from Nero ( I would have to buy version 8 which I'm not willing to buy as of now).

I brought the laptop to the retailer and asked for it to be repaired under the extended warranty. They only wanted to give me a monetary credit to buy a new laptop. I did not wan't any of it as the new laptops run Vista and I did not want to get into that mess as I have a lot of legacy software. In any case, after fighting it with them for a full month, they agreed to get it sent to HP once more. They found that the motherboard was bad and changed it as well as they installed a new dvd drive. They did not reinstall Windows. HP repair put in a handwritten note on the pc saying that if I could not burn dvd's, then reinstall windows.

I now have time and need to get through this matter. Also, my extended warranty expires in 4 months so I really want to see through this problem.

As soon as I got the pc back, I obviously tried to burn DVD's. I was unsuccessfull. I entered in many chat sessions with HP and in summary, after trying all of their suggestions ( including going in Hkeys and deleting the upper and lowers as per Microsoft bulletin). I could then burn dvd's but they were unreadable by other pc's : the disk was not recognised as if it was a blank disk. Their suggestion was to return it to HP to put in a new drive as this new one is probably defective. I inquired to them if reinstalling windows would do anything and they said they do not think it is a windows issue. I googled and saw that other HP users have had dvd burning issues with pavilions but it appears that it is not only an HP issue but an issue with many makes of laptops, desktops and drive manufacturers.

I was puzzled to say the least. I called back my local store and mentionned the HP chat comments. I did not feel good about sending the laptop once more to install a new drive. The store said it could indeed be bad as they have had similar cases in the past. Still that did not make sense to me. We agreed for me to bring it back to the store so that the local store tech could try a few things. He called me back and said that he managed to burn dvd's with my laptop but only in no fault mode. He suggested that I reinstall XP. I was happy about that first positive development.

I picked the laptop and tried burning a few dvd's. It indeed burns but only single layer. If I try a double layer ( in no fault mode as I do not feel good about reinstalling XP and all my softwares escpecially since HP chat does not think it is necessary), here is the Nero log that I get :

Difficult to say

Sun, 2008-09-21 18:05 by admin

DVD burners have always been problematic, and even more problematic are the raw media. Most of what's on the market is garbage. Which manufacturer made your media?

In my experience you can buy Maxell, perhaps Ricoh and Verbatim, but things keep changing. Try different media anyway.

If you cannot burn with high-quality media, then the suspicion is indeed that the drive is bad, which is just bad luck. I would try to find a computer shop that is willing to put in a new drive for a test and demonstrate whether it works. If it does, you may have to pay a somewhat higher price than mail-order, but the guys need to make a living. They could try a different type of drive, as long as it fits.

I'm not sure what no-fault mode means, but I think it should not be needed.

Follow-up on questions and comments from amin

Sun, 2008-09-21 19:45 by freespirit

Hi,

Thanks for the prompt feedback. Good points. I tried to be as descriptive as can be. Here's a few more bits of info:

The disks I'm using as of now are Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4X( Advanced AZO - ultimate performanc & durability);

At the store, when I brought back the device for testing a few days ago, we hooked up a usb drive with which we were able to burn DVD+R from Maxell. I was to test it on the above mentionned Verbatim DL but the tech at the store told me that if the device was able to burn a DVD+R, it would be able to burn a Double layer. He wanted me to save a few dollars and I didn't mind that!

When the tech called me back to tell me he managed to burn DVD on my laptop in "Safe Mode" ( what I earlier called "No Fault mode" which is the word to word translation I came up with for the french "mode sans échec" as my laptop is loaded in a french Window XP) he used a Verbatim DVD+R RW 16x.

Since my pc is still under warranty as earlier mentionned, I do not feel like shelling new money for a DVD burner that should have worked in the first place. I'm still hoping to find a solution with my actual hardware/software.

Hence, I'm still open for suggestions to try,

thanks

Cheers,

Luc

Works in safe mode

Mon, 2008-09-22 19:10 by admin

Hmm, that's strange. If burning works in Safe Mode, but not in the normal Windows, then one of the drivers may interfere.

Another procedure to test whether the Windows installation is faulty would be this:

  1. Pull out the hard disk.
  2. Put in an empty hard disk, which could be a borrowed one.
  3. Install Windows on it.
  4. Install a DVD burning program like Roxio or Nero.
  5. Test the burning.

If that works fine, then the problem is in the software. If it still doesn't work, then the problem is in the hardware.

However, if you can already burn DVDs in Safe Mode, then that already proves that the hardware is good. I couldn't quite make out whether the tech helper could only burn on the USB burner or also on the internal one.

Answer to questions

Tue, 2008-09-23 00:33 by freespirit

Hi,

Like I said, it burns in safe mode but not double layer ( the error report I submited in my first post is such a double layer burn that failed while in safe mode);

As far a single layer is concerned, it burns fine in Safe Mode ( I.E. readable by my pc or other pc's) but when I burn in regular Windows the DVD is then not readable by any pc ( it does not log any errors, i.e. the process cycles to the end);

At the store, we did two tests:

The first test was with an external usb DVD burner with regular Windows running and that was readable by my HP laptop's internal DVD drive and other pc's;

The second test was done by the tech in Safe Mode with my HP laptop's internal DVD drive on a single layer blank DVD disk and that was readable by any machine.

I won't be able to do the hard disk swap so I was more hoping to find a software fix ( without reinstalling windows XP).

Hope that clarifies a bit. If you need any more details, I'll obviously be happy to supplement.

Thanks,

Luc

Impossible to diagnose

Wed, 2008-09-24 17:09 by admin

I think the situation is so strange that it is impossible to diagnose from far. It may be impossible to diagnose at all. There may be multiple independent failures.

For example, if the burner can burn a single layer, but not double-layer, this looks to me like a hardware failure of the burner, because the software doesn't care much about the layers.

But if it doesn't burn at all, that could be a software error, like a faulty driver or a faulty combination of drivers.

I hope you made sure that all involved software, particularly the drivers and the BIOS, are fully up to date.
