Windows/Microsoft Update/XP SP 2 download problems

Sat, 2008-01-05 09:02 by Abalistar · Forum/category:

Okay, I recently reformatted my PC, because I'm giving it to someone else. I reinstalled XP no problem, I got a few updates downloaded through Windows Update, but now the Windows Update webpage won't even load, and the Microsoft Update page only seems to load after a couple tries. And even when it does, I get an error 0x8024402C half the time. The other half of the time, I get it to load up, but it won't download SP2. It'll act like it's going to, but then after a while, I get an error saying "The following updates could not be downloaded(or installed, forget exactly what it says)" and it lists Service Pack 2.

At first I thought it was a problem with my internet connection or modem, but I didn't seem to be having the problems with other webpages. I do, however, have trouble getting Microsoft websites to load in general on top of this though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Many possible causes

There are several possible causes. One suspicion is that it has something to do with proxy server settings.

Let's try this Microsoft Knowledge Base article first (from You may receive an error message when you search for available updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site):

0x8024402C or 0x8024502d error codes

To resolve these errors, remove characters from the proxy exception list, and then clear the proxy cache. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advanced.
4. Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.
5. Quit Internet Explorer.
6. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
7. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
proxycfg - d
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv

Dial up

Went to try it, but I'm on dial up, so the options are all grayed out.

OK, next step

If that was not the cause, go to http://update.microsoft.com/ and, on the left side, click on: FAQ

Read that page thoroughly and follow its advice.

If the solution is not there, continue at the Microsoft Update Troubleshooter link, which is also on that page.
