Crippled Android phones

Mon, 2013-03-25 09:30 by Hans · Forum/category:

Here is an interesting article on The Verge, describing how to change at least the looks and the primary user interface of an Android phone that is burdened with they typical bloatware, like HTC Sense or Samsung TouchWiz, such that the phone looks and behaves more like a Nexus phone:

Back to stock: get the Nexus look on any Android phone

The article also has a lively, but very long discussion in its comments.

Buy Nexus

Sat, 2013-02-16 12:54 by Hans · Forum/category:

Introduction

So you want to buy a smartphone. But which one? There is a bewildering array of smartphones and pads/tablets from many manufacturers. What are the essential differences?

Here is my very simple recommendation: Buy only a Nexus device.

Samsung Android phone GPS defect

Fri, 2012-09-21 21:23 by Hans · Forum/category:

I used to track airline flights with my old Garmin GPS receiver. The device was not very sensitive, but tracked most of the in-flight segments when being held directly to the window of an airliner, requiring a minimum of 4 satellites for 3D tracking.

I tried the same with a HTC Google Nexus One. It did not work initially, but at some time before or since upgrading its radio firmware to the latest available (Korean) release and the operating system to CyanogenMod 7.2, it has worked exceedingly well and has been a very reliable track recorder in flight.

Android 4.1 no sync

Sun, 2012-09-09 13:39 by admin · Forum/category:

So your Android 4 device suddenly stopped synchronizing and you don't know how to get it back on track. It just happened to me, and I was stunned.

My previous smartphone, running Gingerbread aka Android 2.3, already had a pretty bad trap in that area. You had to know that it was not enough to look at the account setting with a green synchronize symbol next to it—no, you had to tap on it, which was not at all obvious, and check all the separate synch settings.

HTC Legend battery indicator underreads

Thu, 2011-12-22 17:55 by admin · Forum/category:

Solution

I am talking about the problem where the HTC Legend does not, or does only after special measures, charge up to 100%, then too rapidly discharges down to some 3%, then continues to run for hours through these last three percent until the battery runs empty.

In fact, the phone and its charging behavior is mostly or wholly normal, but the displayed battery charge level is wrong and usually too low. You also get low-battery warnings long before the accumulator actually shuts off. This may be caused by an underreading voltage sensor.

su Binary updaten auf Smartphones mit S-ON

Mon, 2011-10-31 16:53 by admin · Forum/category:

Gmail does not automatically receive mail

Sun, 2011-07-24 19:26 by admin · Forum/category:

If Google Mail on an Android phone does not automatically sync mail, one possible reason is that after some system change one or more of the sync settings were disabled.

Tap Menu, Settings, Accounts & sync. Here you see two checkboxes that should both be checked, namely:

  • Background data
  • Auto-sync

You need both settings activated to automatically receive mail.

A charging cable for Android smartphones

Sat, 2011-06-25 12:13 by Hans · Forum/category:

Background

Modern smartphones and other phones are charged through a micro USB socket and cable. However, the USB standard introduces a problem. USB provides only an insufficient maximum current of 0.5 A (at 5 V), and even that only after a negotiation with the computer. Without negotiation the limit is some 100 mA.

All about the CyanogenMod dockbar

This article is based on CyanogenMod 6.1, an enhanced version of Android 2.2.1. Much of it is also valid for CyanogenMod 6.0, which is based on Android 2.2. And it is of some interest to all Android users, mod or not.

Every Android user knows the dockbar, which rests on the lower edge of the desktop and, by default, contains the following three action buttons:
