unrequired programs

I seem to have an enormous amount of programs listed in the control panel. Is there any way that I can get rid of some? I don't know what they do, or are for. How can I tell if they are vital to my system?

I can't uninstall a program

Sun, 2008-11-02 16:28 by btronk · Forum/category:

I run windows xp and I was recently attempting to install the video game Neverwinter Nights 2. During installation, my computer shut off through a seperate issue that has since been fixed. Now the game is not installed properly and any attempts to uninstall give me a long error message followed by error code -5001. Since then the folder in program files has been deleted. Is there any way to uninstall this useless program from my computer? The fact that it is still there prevents me from trying to reinstall the game too.

Windows Explorer doesen't stop deleting files under XP sp2

Wed, 2008-10-29 07:33 by komadich · Forum/category:

Hi!

It has been some time now I'm noticing this problem. When I delete files with Windows Explorer, the dialog displaying the progress of deleting stays open even if the files are already deleted. This caused no major problem since now, but now I started using other tools that delete files and the tools halt (W.Explorer doesen't really halt, seems to be multithread).

Does anyone know what this is about? I noticed this problem on many computers so far.

Thanks!

Tonique

Clearing run history

Tue, 2008-09-30 12:41 by macker7963 · Forum/category:

My Computer seems to clear the Run history i.e. every time I go to the Run menu it's memory is blank, as far as it is concerned I've never used it before. How do I stop this,i.e. how do i get it to remember what I've run before?

Service Pack 2 installs then reboots to Safe Mode

Mon, 2008-09-15 16:30 by Tullynessle · Forum/category:

I needed to rebuild my hard drive and have reloaded XP Home edition from CD. I then loaded SP2 without any apparent problems. When I select the reboot to complete the install can only reopen windows in safe mode. I have opted for a system restore point on 3 occasions and reverted to the microsoft site for a solution.

Vista logon screen resolution?

Sun, 2008-09-07 21:26 by pj.de.bruin · Forum/category:

My Vista Basic SP1 logon screen has only VGA resolution (640x480), while all users and the administrator account have full screen resolution (1280x800).
Any idea how to correct this?

Cannot print unless I reboot

Thu, 2008-07-31 14:31 by cornishwafer · Forum/category:

My Windows XP SP3 workstation has stopped printing to a network printer. I have tried different drivers from HP and even replaced the network card but nothing will print unless I reboot the machine. Nothing prints at the login screen, it is only after I login that everything then churns out of the printer.

I don't think there is anything wrong with any hardware as I have also installed Ubuntu 8.04 on another hard disk in the same machine and I can print without any problems. So it looks as if my Windows installation has gone wrong somehow.

Has anyone experienced this problem before ?

Double-click searches folder instead of opening it

Sat, 2008-07-12 01:41 by Zeta27 · Forum/category:

Problem: Default action on folders is "search" instead of open

Potential cause: a .reg file from the topic Systray Icons missing post (systray.reg or systray_undo.reg)

I will appreciate a lot some help. I will edit the topic with the fixes that work

administrator cannot change settings

Wed, 2008-07-09 06:18 by fishcat · Forum/category:

Am logged in as admin but no changes can be made to the system. when I attempt to make a change (msconfig, etc.) windows lets me know that I am not logged in as admin. But I am definitely the admin.

I Installed winXP Pro on this machine some time ago. Also have SP2 and SP3. Have had no other problems that make any difference.
Because this is an HP machine I have to get tech support from the far East and I am trying to avoid that hassle.

Anyone have any suggestions...

Thanks, Fishcat
