How to update CyanogenMod using the automatic updater

First thing I would do is a system update, which is automatic after you start it and may take between half an hour and one hour, depending on how many apps you have installed.

The battery should be nearly full or you should have the phone connected to a charger or a computer. Tap Settings, About phone, CyanogenMod updates (the top choice). Tap the circular arrow symbol (top right) to get the latest updates.

Check whether the new update bears the same major version number as the one you have currently installed. For example, if you have cm-12.1 installed but get a newer one offered, say, cm-13.0, then do not update as described here. Instead read the article How to update from CyanogenMod 12.1 to 13.0.

Now you need up to 300 MB data, so go to a place where you have Wi-Fi or have a big enough mobile data bundle and a good mobile data connection like H, H+, 3G, 4G, LTE.

Tap the download symbol next to the latest version, the top one, and wait until it is downloaded.

Then tap the symbol again, which has now changed to the install symbol. Now you are in for the long wait until the update process is finished.

That's it. Enjoy the new version.
