System restore problem in XP

Sat, 2014-04-19 17:44 by dgutman · Forum/category:

I am unable to start System Restore. When I click on the system restore tab, I get the following message from rundll:

An exception occurred while trying to run "D:\windows\system32\shell32.DLL,Control_RunDLL "D:\windows\system32\sysdm.cpl",System"

Windows XP is on the D drive, a SCSI hard drive on an Adaptec controller. The boot sequence starts on a FAT32 C drive. During startup, control is passed from the C drive to the D drive. System restore should be operating on both drives, and both show up in Computer Management.

After startup the event viewer shows two errors -- The System Restore Service terminated because the system cannot find the path specified and the System Restore initialization process failed. Both shell32.DLL and sysdm.cpl exist in the system32 directory.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

Repair installation

I have no specific idea on what could be the cause. My first recommendation is to click the "Start" button in the top left on this web page and follow the general advice, particularly the repair installation.

A repair installation is a somewhat heavier step than System Restore and can reset a few Windows settings to their defaults, but it does keep your installed software, its settings, and data intact.
