IE 8 / Win XP Pro SP 3 - Cannot display webpage

IE 8 / Win XP Pro SP 3 - Cannot display webpage

We have an office network comprising the following:

Dell server running Win 2008 Server, providing DHCP and DNS
Broadband router
SonicWall TZ 150
Network switch
10 workstations running Win XP Pro SP3

All internal comms are fine, and requests for websites in IE 8 are fine for 8 computers, but on 2 of them IE says "Cannot display web page"

I've check the firewall and everything's okay there, and anyway I figure the problem must be on the workstations because most of the PCs have no problems.

I've reset IE back to factory settings, disabled the PC firewall, etc. but no joy.

Tried with Firefox and got same results.

Nothing in the event log.

I can ping one of the sites ( but ping failed on another (

My next step is to run one of the PCs in safe mode with networking and see if I can connect.

Other options are - check for any remaining components of old anti-virus software - AVG Free is running now, but I think McAfee used to be on those 2 PCs

Another option might be to check for any unusual services that might be running that could block the page retrieval.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, or does anyone have any suggestions?

Tried that, plus a lot of other things! No joy so far.


re-register IE dlls
mcafee removal tool
norton removal tool
disable firewall
removed AVG
ran in safe mode with networking

I'm out of options at this stage and utterly baffled!
