Starting programs from file servers or from peer computers

Some programs store their settings in INI files in their program folders. Example: Agent and Free Agent by Forté. These can be started on any machine without any problems.

Most other programs, however, store their settings in the registry, which is local. These usually cannot be started on any other machine before being installed there, unless you copy and graft the registry settings into the other computer's registry. To prevent this, some programs hide an encrypted key somewhere in the registry which is difficult to find and identify.

Also watch out for the legality of what you want to do.
