New xp install stalls on file transfer

Mon, 2009-08-17 09:58 by Deltablack · Forum/category:

to start I have a
MSI rx480 Neo 2 MOBO
WD 1600bb HD
unknown basic video card
and a basic cd/dvd drive

I have tried repeatedly to install xpsp3 on this system and each time during the file transfer period it stalls on a file and then nothing happens. I have tried different disks to eliminate disk errors. I have completely wiped and reformatted/partitoned the drive and still can get nothing to work.
I am trying to figure what my next step is to try to get this thing to load.

I did try early on to install Win7 but it did not even start to install

Try to remove one of your RAM

Nope

So I remove one of the ram sticks still facing the same issue
ON ubuntu it looked like it was starting to load (which is more than i had before) but stalled in the middle.

on XP I tried twice with different hard drives one stalled at 30% on fileD3D9.dll the other stopped at 29% at file cdosys.dll

I took the rig apart to make sure everything was hooked up right, made sure all cables were Ok, I tried a couple of different Ram sticks as well and still nothing.

Any other suggestions ?

Thanks for the Help

Hardware error

Standard hardware repair procedure

Are you conversant with computer hardware and have all the tools? First thing to try is to reseat all plug-in components to clear corrosion problems.

If that doesn't fix the computer, you have to use standard procedures to identify the defective component, essentially by swapping components.

I will admit I am not an

I will admit I am not an Expert on building Computers but I have had a few apart and did go through and rechecked all my connections.
I swapped out HD's ,Ram, and even switched up the DVD rom. I also made sure all jumpers were in the right positions on the HD and ROM.
Best I can figure at this point is that the MOBO is defective. but not sure how to figure that out.
The only thing I do not have duplicates of is my Video card. Could that be causing the problems I am having?

Thanks for all the help

Anything can cause this

Nearly every component can cause such problems. It can be the video adapter or the motherboard.

A software incompatibility is unlikely, but can't be ruled out entirely either.

Perhaps you can find a good hardware test program, something that boots from a CD and checks the hardware as well as possible. An interesting question is whether anything can be booted on the computer, like Knoppix or any similar operating system that can boot directly from a CD.

Knoppix worked

Knoppix loaded and I was able to access internet and HD with no problem.

I tried to install a secondary DVD/ROM and I then had a problem it said my video card was not auto detectable and would not load. I took the card out placed it another machine and found out it was a SIS 315. after unplugging the secondary drive Knoppix loaded just fine again.

now what can i do to get XP or Win 7 loaded ?

Very confusing

What did you install and uninstall and why? What worked and what did not work?

If Knoppix runs in one particular configuration, perhaps you can try to install Windows 7 on the same configuration?

Or install Ubuntu and, if it works, use that instead.
