Windows XP SP2 repair question

Sun, 2009-01-11 18:57 by halbooss · Forum/category:

An XP machine with SP2 already installed and is getting a blue screen.

My question:
Is an XP sp2 CD required to run the repair on this PC?
is it repairable with an XP sp1 CD?????
and If i use an XP SP1 to run the repair, what will be the consequences????

Yes, XP SP2 is required

The normal method to do a repair installation on an XP installation with SP2 (Service Pack 2) is to use a full retail installation CD that has SP2 already integrated.

If you don't have that, you can create a slipstream CD yourself. The procedure is explained in in the Windows XP Service Pack 2/3 Problem Solver, chapter "Read this first", subchapter "How to create a slipstream CD".

If you did a repair installation with an XP SP1 CD, you would probably get a messed-up system, perhaps with mixed SP1 and SP2 components, that may not be bootable, but I have not tried that lately. The going recommendation is not to try it.

By the way, Windows XP has been at SP3 for a while, and installing SP3 is recommended. I would not recommend to do a repair installation with an XP SP3 CD now either, because your system is currently at the SP2 state, and I cannot tell for sure what would happen. If you tried that without any good confirmation that it works, you'd be on your own.

Then install SP3, and if you want to play it safe, create an XP SP3 slipstream CD for the next case of an unbootable system.

I beg to differ

I have read in other articles that if I repair the XP sp2 with an XP sp1 CD, then the sp2 files will be removed and replaced with the sp1, BUT before getting online with this PC, I must reapply sp2 to complete the repair....

read this link on warnning #3

So does this mean that an XP sp2 is repairable using XP sp1 CD? please confirm with your opinion, Thank you..

Don't know

I don't know. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't.

Certainly it is cleaner to use a slipstream CD with the matching service pack for the repair. Since a slipstream CD is not that difficult to make, the question may be moot.
