wintask.exe ?Hi HG! I've searched google with no avail so I thought I might ask in here! I found several websites saying different things, but none of them seem to be credible websites. I've recently purchased a new hard drive to replace my C Drive. Instead of backing everything up from my old C Drive, installing the newly purchased drive and then restoring everything, I simply put the old C drive the secondary position, and the new drive in the primary position. This way I can install a fresh copy of Windows and still move all of the old files over as I please. I've now installed windows on the new hard drive and have been reinstalling all of my software moving pictures over etc. However, I've noticed after the last two reboots of the computer that wintask.exe was a running processin the background. It seems to gun everything up; using lots of cpu power, lot allowing me to access websites etc. Is this an actual windows file? Or is it malware? It is located at C:\Windows\wintask.exe and I am able to disable it's startup in the system configuration utility (found via start>run>msconfig) I fear my computer may already be infected as when I visited the hosts file I found it had been edited sending microsoft.com, symantec.com antivirus.symantec.com and many others pointing to the localhost ip of 127.0.0.1 Thanks for any help! :) |

Trojan

Hi Colin, nice to meet you here!
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but wintask.exe is a virus or a Trojan component, a downloader. Stop it and delete it as soon as possible, and use two different virus checkers to clean the computer.
Apart from that, have a nice Christmas time!
Windows had an update

Thanks for the reply, in the meantime, windows had done it's updates and removed it. I use AVG free (currently up to date and scans every night) and it never picked it up!
I guess it was one of those malicious software removal tools?
Either way, thank you for your help once again! :)
Ah, good!

Yes, Microsoft now issues a malware removal tool with their monthly patch day updates that removes some of the nastiest critters. Apparently you were lucky with this one. Guess we're both glad it's gone.
Interesting that AVG didn't find it, but that's why I recommended to use at least two virus removers, to increase the likelihood that the malware is detected.
AVG might have picked it up later, after more updates, but by then the malware might already have installed more nasty stuff. You should still be watching carefully, because that might already have happened. Watch out for suspicious behavior like continuous Internet traffic and the like.
