I messed up my registry long ago and now it's back to haunt me.About a year ago I had to employ a registry hack to get a certain game working (The Witcher, pretty cool RPG). I don't remember the exact hack but I know it had to do with VC80.dll or something like that. It also involved side-by-side configuration. The problem was the game was looking for a certain version number, which was wrong (loads of people were experiencing this problem), so basically I had to change the version number in a few spots in the registry. Ok in the process I made Windows unable to use Windows Installer, which means I can't install a ton of useful programs and updates of preexisting programs. I have tried to retrace my steps from memory but I can't seem to do it. What is the best way of restoring my registry to where it was a year ago without losing too much subsequently acquired data? Also I do not have Vista disks. I have an Hp Pavilion m8150n. To be honest I'm not sure where my copy of Vista is within my PC. I guess in the recovery drive or something? But I don't know how to access that. Sorry for being so mega-noob. I'm really not dumb just not very immersed in the inner-workings of PCs. |

Can not install programs
Sun, 2008-11-02 18:39 by LeeSally
I recently have this problem. I had Microsoft ( YES, MICROSOFT's technician on the phone and on line with me for a month... almost three night a week to repair...) . They did everything they could think of, ...I finally exhsusted all revenue, and I reformatted my disk.
For some reason, my computer could not load some files, even some Microsoft's files, claiming it is from unkown publisher. Soem file just started download and disappeared.
For some reason, my XP disk does not give me the "repair option) so I just backup my data file and my drivers, brutally reformatted my drive. Now my computer runs very well.
That's the last resort

If all else fails, you have to reinstall from scratch, that's true.
The repair installation option comes after you first choose to install Windows. The installer should then find the existing installation and ask you whether you want it repaired. It is only that second choice where you have to press R, not the first. Read more
It may not be possible

It may not be possible to repair that, if you cannot undo all changes. Your best bet is a Repair Installation, but of course that doesn't overwrite all registry settings, only the most important ones. You should try it anyway, because it usually doesn't do any harm.
Does this apply to Vista as

Does this apply to Vista as well as XP?
If so I will try to track down a Vista disk.
Yes

Vista can also do a repair installation.
Usually you need a full retail disk though, OEM CDs won't do.
