Using WinXP I can not load a page using the page name. However, using the IP address the page loads. This is true for firefox and IE7 and for two different networks.
To clarify further, typing www.google.com goes nowheres, typing 64.233.169.99 gets me google. clicking on any search leads to nothing.
Any other computer using the same networks has no problems

Are your IP address settings on automatic? If not, you have to tell your computer about DNS servers.
It is also possible that some malware hijacked the Winsock stack. Check the Network Problem Solver.

The IP address settings are on automatic.
The DNS client services is running on automatic. Everything related TCP/IP address, DNS server address is automatic.
As for winsock I ran netsh winsock reset and netsh winsock reset catalogue
I revewed the Network Problem Solver but found nothing that helped.
There has been no change.
I did not mention that the wireless connection does not work. It recognizes the wireless network but will not connect with either windows or with Thinkvantage settings.
It would be much easier to just reinstall Windows but I have found myself obsessed by this.

I would research in three directions.
If you have a router, most routers act as DNS proxies, so the router should be your DNS server.
I would also try to enter these settings manually, i.e. give the computer a fixed IP address, fixed standard gateway, and fixed DNS server address. Try an external DNS server too.

Thanks, will try again. There is one fact that was called to my attention. This is not my computer and the problem occurred after SP3 was installed. I uninstalled it and the computer says it is using SP2. However, I've read that you really can not uninstall SP3.
The problem is router independent and browser independent - both firefox and IE are affected

I wouldn't uninstall SP3

Millions of computers run it without any problems. You can uninstall it, as you have done, but I guess that didn't solve the problem anyway.
