SP2 upgrade disrupts video output

I've been working on a Compaq EVO 310. I did a complete re-install of Windows XP Pro, and everything was OK.

The first couple rounds of updates caused no problems, but when I installed Service Pack 2 and rebooted, I only got 4-bit video. Pretty messy!

I uninstalled SP2 and the display was again at 32-bit with no problems.

I'm not a Windows guy. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

What I would try

What happens when you try to set the graphics back to the highest color quality? To try this, reinstall Service Pack 2 first. Then:

  1. Right-click into the empty screen space.
  2. Select: Properties
  3. Click on the Settings tab.
  4. Select a higher color quality.

Assuming that this does not work, please report here which way it fails.

If it fails, I would try this:

  1. Reinstall Service Pack 2, if you haven't done it already.
  2. Download the latest driver from the manufacturer of the graphics adapter from their web site.
  3. Install it.
  4. Try again to change the color quality, if it is still too low.

The Service Pack 2 Problem Solver already explains this in the chapter Computer does not work properly with Service Pack 2.
