non-responsive

When I go into a web site I sometimes get an error warning "non responsive" and I am unable to proceed. The error message gives me the following codes;-

C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNBA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER7213.dir00\iexplore.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNBA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER7213.dir00\appcompat.txt

Does this mean my setup is wrong, or am I missing some files?
It doesn't happen every time but is very frustrating whem I am, perhaps, doing a survey and can't get beyond a certain page.

I am not very computer literate but am able to follow well explained steps.

Which software, which version?

Which operating system? What exactly are you doing? Under which circumstances does the error occur? What is the exact error message?

XP SP2

It happens when I use the mouse. The pointer turns into an hour glass and only turns back to a pointer when I put it on the X at the right hand top of the screen. After a few moments a dialog box tells me that it is now non responsive and the error box gives me the error I mentioned.

Which software, which version?

We still need to know which program and which version of the program you have on the screen when this happens.

It may be useful to read How to ask in a forum or newsgroup, subchapter, "Call for help".

non responsive

XP home edition SP2

It normally happens on a page that I arrived at by a link in another page. This is either from a blog or a web site on my desktop. I suppose the program is windows explorer.

Try to find a friend

Can you find a friend who is conversant with computers and ask for help? Sorry, but I fear that a remote diagnosis is impossible in this case.

Non responsive program and not shutting down

JB
I contacted Dell at the suggestion of Microsoft. Dell told me to use the "task manager" to undo the non responsive programs. This is what I have been doing all along. They did, however, put me on to "Counterspy" which I downloaded for free. This came up with Xupiter which was in my computer. No other anti-spy program spotted it. I have used Counterspy to delete Xupiter and my machine seems to be much faster and as yet I have not had the non-responsive problem. If you are interested I will keep you posted.

Thanks for reporting this!

Interesting information. Yes, please keep everybody posted on the proceedings. I guess we now have a recommendation for Counterspy.

non responsive

It is now 1st May and as yet I have had no recurrence of the "application hang" with the "non responsive" caption. It would appear that Counterspy did the trick. It always amazes me, however, that each different computer cleaner comes up with different faults. I tend to try all the free trials, so I see a lot of them. I only use the free ones continually. I must say that with broadband, I am getting loads of rubbish. Much more that with dial up. I am cleaning out this rubbish every night just before turning it off.

Good to hear

Two little points. One is that the adware/spyware scanners are usually somewhat over-eager and report lots of things that aren't really a threat.

The other is the question whether you have a router or whether your computer is connected directly to the Internet. If the latter, then your computer is much more at risk and is continuously bombarded with various attacks. A router with NAT (Network Address Translation, something almost every home router has to have) protects you insofar as your computer can no longer be reached directly from the outside.
