Dial-up problems in Windows XP

Only one user can use the Internet connection

The symptom is that other users of the same computer can see the Internet connection, but cannot use it. To change this, use the following procedure.

  1. Log in as Administrator or as a user with administrator rights.
  2. Open the Network Connections folder.
  3. Right-click the desired dial-up connection.
  4. Click on: Properties
  5. Click on: Options
  6. Put a check mark in the box: Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc.
  7. Click on: OK
  8. Double-click on the same connection.
  9. Put a check mark in the box: Save this user name and password for the following users.
  10. Click on: Anyone who uses this computer
  11. Click on: Dial

Later you can go through the first steps again and uncheck the prompt for name and password option.

All Internet traffic goes through the dial-up connection

If you don't want that, uncheck the "Use default gateway on remote network" setting under TCP/IP for the dial-up (or VPN) connection.
