I have LAN problem, actually it is still not establish. Here I have write the details about my computer and Ethernet cards.

Desktop (Assemble): Intel Celeron 1000 MHz, with 256 MB RAM, 80 GB Samsung HDD. I just bought LAN card D-Link DFE-520TX PCI Fast Ethernet Card. I have installed it on PCI slot on my motherboard. I have Intel 810E chipset motherboard. I have also installed driver from CD and every thing is OK with installation. I used Windows XP SP2 version 2002. OS is on primary partition with 15 GB (on “C” Drive) and rest of secondary partition (“D” Drive).

Laptop (Samsung VM 8000): Intel Celeron 800 MHz, with 320 MB RAM, 80 GB Fujitsu HDD, inbuilt Ethernet card is Sis 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Card. Driver installation is fine and everything is OK. This dual OS, in primary partition I have (on “C” Drive, 15 GB) Windows 2000 Professional SP4 and secondary partition (on “D” Drive, 15 GB) Windows XP SP2 version 2002. My default OS is XP here. My “E” drive is back and storage drive that is 50 GB.

I got 5 meters crossover cable with RJ-45. People told me that I don’t need switch or hub for to connect two computers only with is on windows XP. I want to connect my desktop to my laptop with both OS w2k and XP.

Now what I did is here. I have installed their both driver on PC and laptop. Both installed perfectly fine. Then I connected cable between both. Now I got two small computers icon beside my antivirus and firewall icons and it say Status: connected with 100 MBPS speed on both computer.

I am using dial up Internet connection by 56 kbps external modem (on com port). I am not interested to connect Internet through my PC for my laptop. I just want connect (LAN) for my both computer because I want to transfer data only and don’t want to surf on net. I have installed Home and Office Network Setup Wizard many time from my desktop computer and save that network setup on floppy disk according to instruction and then I installed that floppy setup fine on laptop computer but nothing happened.

Manually I tried this
Desktop PC (Host) : IP : 192.168.0.1 Laptop (Client): IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.2 Default Gateway: 192.168.01

I don’t know what to enter in DNS server and other options.

Then I have rebooted both computers. Its still show me both computer are connected by icon on taskbar. I have shared my both storage drive fully (“D” on my PC and “E” on my laptop). Now when I go to Start->Connect to->Show all Connections->and then click on “My Network Places” on Network Task on left panel for “View group computers”, I am getting nothing here in mygroups. I have different name and description on both computer and same workgroup name “MSHOME” by default.
I have provided the details that I know. I am good in computer and not for LAN that I never did before. Please provide me details and guideline what to do to connect my PC and my laptop together by LAN (crossover cable). I have 27 GB data to transfer from PC to laptop. I am hopping provide me details step by step.

Use the Windows Network Problem Solver.

Fill in the form and read the results. First of all, read the general advice, particularly the step-by-step instructions.

Then please report here in any case.

There are too many possible causes to list them all here. To give just one example out of many, there are a few network adapter types that don't work with crossover cables.
