Clearing previous instances of network connections when re-installing

Mon, 2008-01-14 18:46 by rj-reynolds · Forum/category:

I have win xp sp3 and had probs with wireless connection so uninstalled and re-installed 5 times before it worked properly. Now my network wireless connection says "wireless connection 6" instead of "wireless connection" I remember this from long ago but cannot remember how to clear out previous ones to get it back to none. Can someone help and know what I'm talking about? Thank You.

Delete, rename

You can delete the unneeded connections and rename the last one to whatever you like.

There IS only one connection in network connections

Apparently either someone doesn't know what I'm talking about or I explained it wrong. In any case I am talking about my instance in network connections saying it is "network connection 6" BECAUSE I uninstalled and reinstalled 5 times. Those records of instances are somewhere because if I uninstalled this connection the next install would say connection 7. Get the picture?....Just trying to find out where to clear them from, registry or whatever.

Oh, you want to reset the counter!

Sorry, I don't know where that counter is. It is even possible that the system keeps some nearly invisible memory of each connection.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry too much, because if you worry about this in Windows, then you'll soon find many more things to worry about, and not all are as harmless as this one.
