I often receive e-mail with attachments. Sometimes I am unable to open them. My free coral has run out and it is quite expensive to renew, so I was wondering how I could open these attachments without spending a lot of money.
I assume you are afraid to open them because they may contain viruses or worms. And we should be afraid, because most of today's worms come in email attachments.
You can use one of the several free anti-virus programs. I use the free version of AVG from http://free.grisoft.com/, but there are others that may be even better. Have a good look around for recommendations.
Most of these programs can scan incoming emails, but if they can't, you can save the attachment to the hard disk, then scan it with the virus scanner. Just saving it will not start the virus, if there is any.
A virus is only started when you open a file that contains program code, for example, when you double-click on an EXE or VBS or any other program file or when you open a Word document in Word that contains macros and Word doesn't have macros disabled.
Or do you mean you get picture attachments and cannot view the pictures? In that case my recommendation would be IrfanView.
